Students may be reluctant readers for a variety of reasons. Regardless of the reason, we want to encourage our students to be active readers in a safe environment. They can comfortably apply literacy strategies and practice skills they have learned in their Resource classroom with minimal risk of failure. A book club with an engaging, popular book is a perfect environment for a student to gain confidence in his or her reading abilities. The book HOLES is an entertaining, exciting book with good lessons to learn. Students stay engaged while reading it, and they usually share thoughts and anecdotes with their peers. Reading books together shows students that reading can be fun while also being beneficial, and hopefully that translates into further reading. Watching the video afterward will reinforce the reading as well, and provide a bonding opportunity for the students in the classroom.
