Every year my focus is to create a space in my classroom where students feel safe to share and interact with their peers. A place where they can be themselves, and learn how to have conversations with one another. Our focus is not only to learn to speak respectfully to one another, but to listen attentively with respect as well. These skills take time to teach and learn, but my students have proven to be successful at this through partner work and group collaborations. We do this through the work of reading novels. With the current events of 2020, I believe it is important to continue these conversations in my classroom. Even though our learning will happen virtually, my desire is to continue to create a safe place even it's behind the screen. My 6th & 8th grade students will be able to have these books in their hands, annotate and explore different themes throughout each of these books. These books will not only educate our students on being anti-racist, but we can have meaningful conversations in our classroom to where we can also work on making a difference, and begin doing the work!
