I'm teaching students who are behind in credits in an after school program. I get to create an English curriculum specially tailored to their needs. They need to learn to read proficiently. The Cultural Empathy Book Club will not only help them to become better readers by being held accountable by their peers and having deep discussions about the books but will also give them insight into cultures and experiences different from their own. This will develop empathy in them that will translate outside of the classroom into their interactions in the cafeteria and in their neighborhood. It's a step toward creating a community culture of understanding and acceptance.
