History has often been taught in the same rote manner: read the chapter, define the vocabulary, and answer the questions. Students deserve to experience our nation's history leaping off the page as living, breathing stories instead of dry words highlighted in a textbook. This is my goal each school year, and utilizing this Newbery Honor book to make the struggles of the American Revolution come alive in my 21st Century classroom will immediately grab my students' full attention. Tim Meeker is torn between his Loyalist father and his Patriot older brother, Sam. The conflict is gripping, and Tim's struggle to pick a side epitomizes the choice many colonists were forced to make during the American Revolution. For so many, the choice was not as simple as King George or the Sons of Liberty. It was choosing a father or a brother. Please help me bring this part of our nation's history to life for my students.
