Flexible seating allows my busy kindergarteners to not be confined to one spot. It provides the opportunity for the student to take charge in their learning and make choices that work best for them. Flexible seating helps student engagement and motivation during independent work time. It also provides an excellent environment to work collaboratively. Student and teacher empowerment increases motivation and engagement which in return produces more learning. Students are not only learning more because they can choose an appropriate learning spot, but they are not expected to sit in desks or in a chair for several hours. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, and sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Replacing our chairs with floor mats and foam blocks will provide my students with more flexible seating options. A rug will make our classroom library more inviting and will be another option to take a clipboard to do classroom work.
