Strickland Middle School is a great school for music education. However, 65% our students are economically disadvantage. Our students struggle to pay for the supplies needed to learn a musical instrument such as reeds, mouthpieces, swabs, books, valve oil, etc. Instruments that use a reed to create a sound, such as the clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon, require more frequent purchases due to the reeds becoming chipped or worn out. The higher cost of playing a reed instrument can often times force parents to choose between their child staying in band or quitting. This project with help provide our students with clarinet, saxophone, oboe, or bassoon reeds for the rest of the school year. This essential item can help us retain almost a third of our program by eliminating further costs for our parents. It also give students' more confidence in their playing ability (there is nothing harder in the band world than trying to play on a reed that is broken or chipped.) If we are able to provide reeds for our students then our talented woodwind players can stop focusing on the money and start focusing on the music. The band isn't complete without our reed players!
