One of the ways I love to foster a sense of community in my classroom is by reading books that students can relate to, and help them relate to others. Statistics show that students are more likely to read when they have access to a classroom library. This year my goal is to create reading circles or online books clubs through google meets, if necessary. I want students to engage in conversations about the books they are reading and find ways to relate them to real life. I do this by using books to connect to a cause that means something to the students and we turn that into community service projects. Last year my students delivered positive notes throughout the school, organized classroom recycling, collected clothes and toiletries for a women’s shelter, mailed cards to soldiers, and much more. Each project was related to a book they read and was of their own choosing. Instilling a love of reading, and a sense of community at this age is critical to helping them grow into productive, caring members of society.
