The materials requested for this project will help develop a LEGO center in the school library makerspace. With a dedicated LEGO space, students will be able to develop engineering, artistic, and problem-solving skills. This is accomplished in the form of STEAM challenges, LEGO tutorials, and creative play! For example, students prompted to build a specific shape with LEGO's will need to visualize how to build the shape using a process known as decomposition. This means that students will examine the whole shape and mentally break it down into smaller components so that the project can be more easily created. This is a critical and computational thinking skill that dovetails with other academic areas. Students also learn how to collaborate and connect with others to come up with solutions by interacting with LEGOs in this manner. This supports classroom interactions with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
