My classroom is super tight, and there are rarely less than 36 students in a class. We’ve been using the tablet desks because they take up less space, but once you add kids I have very few ways to get to the students, especially if they’re deep in a row. Students often ask to go to the hallway to work so they can get some breathing room. I have portable soft seating, but it’s not enough. I’ve been looking for a solution, and I think if I run desks around the back of the room (kind of like a bar or a computer lab) and put swivel stools or chairs there, I can open up more space. I can see what they’re doing on their Chromebooks when they face the wall, and they just need to swivel around when I lecture. I plan to set up table stations in the middle for group work, which will free up more walking space as well. Bean bag chairs and soft seating will go in the corners to be moved out when needed. The bungies. are for toe tappers, and the desk caps are to keep it quiet when we move the seating into new configurations. I hope the five wobbly chairs will be enough for my wrigglers. I have a ball chair now, but it takes up a lot of room and sometimes gets thrown. I’ve already installed cafe lighting, so I can change the ambiance when needed (especially when block four is feeling wild), and I have some floor seating. Anything on this list would be helpful. Whatever I don’t get I plan to find at yard sales, Freecycle, and thrift stores. I’d like to implement this flexible seating plan in the beginning of the 2020 - 2021 school year.
