This year, students in Educators Rising starting taking a look at the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, particularly goal # 4: Quality Education. The students in the class had also done a lot of research on factors contributing to the quality of education for girls around the world and realized that there was one problem (though small) that might be solved in our own school. After polling females on campus, they discovered that over half of the girls have checked out of school because of or anxiety due to accidents brought about because of their menstrual cycles. They also learned through the poll that over half of the girls often felt too embarrassed to ask a teacher, peer, or the front office for sanitary items. Those polled reported substantial loss of class time searching for items. Therefore, one of our EdRising students (Tiffany), launched a plan with her classmates to provide free sanitary items in the main girls' bathroom so that no one had to be embarrassed again, reducing the likelihood of girls checking out of school or feeling anxiety in class. Tiffany and her fellow classmates hope this project becomes sustainable as they also plan to reach out to the community, parents, and fellow students of Brusly High School to replenish supplies.
