Our school serves a highly transient population with 54% of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. As such, our students sometimes struggle with both academics and behavior in our school. In an effort to tackle both areas at once, Oakbrook Elementary would like to implement a Book Vending Machine program for our students. The vending machine requires special tokens, rather than money, to function. Teachers, administration and staff recognize students’ positive behavior and award them a token to acknowledge their actions and encourage them in the future. The students are able to use the token in the vending machine to select a book for themselves to keep and read. The positive actions can be anything from showing kindness to another student to finishing their work in class. In this manner, students who struggle with making the right choices have a chance to succeed as well as the students who are frequently overlooked due to their consistently good behavior. With this project, the students are rewarded for their positive actions, rather than constantly being punished for poor decisions. This encourages students to continue with good behavior and builds great relationships with the teachers and staff, as they acknowledge the positive in the student. At the same time, the students will be able to see reading as a reward, rather than a task to complete only at school. With this new outlook, Oakbrook Elementary expects to see literacy rates improve and for students to demonstrate reading for pleasure both inside and outside of the classroom. We will need new and exciting books to stock our vending machine to encourage our students to strive for these tokens! The books chosen range from PreK level to beyond 5th grade to be able to hit all levels of readers.
