With a large student body comes a very diverse set of interests and abilities. In music we teach every student, and strive to teach lessons that allow for each student to feel successful in some way every time they are in our classroom. Some students prefer to sing while others would much rather demonstrate their skills and knowledge using an instrument. We can use multiple musical mediums to reach auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners all in the same lesson.
Our lessons that incorporate barred instruments not only teach musical concepts, but help students practice interacting with their peers and working cooperatively to share instruments and make music together. With our current set of instruments, only the smallest classes can effectively master a skill in the short time that we have together. The larger classes do their best to share and work together, but there just aren’t enough instruments for each student to get the practice that music requires.
The addition of a soprano xylophone would allow more of our students to be playing at the same time, making this method of learning our skills much faster and more practical. Students would continue to practice their cooperation skills, but we would be able to implement more instrument use for all levels of students at our school.
