Kindred, by Octavia Butler, is one of the most engaging novels I have taught teens. Butler was one of the first women of color to bust through the science-fiction genre barrier and went on to win many awards for her novels and short stories. In Kindred, Dana, a young and educated black writer living in LA in the 1970s, finds herself suddenly transported to the Antebellum South. Butler explores topics and ideas that are so relevant to my students lives. Kindred provides ample opportunities for critical reading, writing, and discussion as well as further study. Students will explore the ideas and themes in Kindred from different lenses: personal, historical, contemporary.
