In my own life, reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" as a young teen was foundational to the life-path that I chose for myself. I have spent 30 years as a public educator, and three-a-half-decades as a country pastor in a rural area in the piney woods of Mississipi. I don't think that I can "draw a chart" that will explain to my young people the world as I see it. But I think that by reading this novel, viewing the Academy Award winning motion picture, and in discussing, researching, and writing about the grand themes of this book a fitting blueprint will be given. I want to help my students envision a more just and peaceful world, and to help them see the benefits of living lives aimed in that direction. It is my aim that this project will not just be an elective unit of instruction. It is my fond hope that it for some young person it will be a turning-point towards a life of goodwill and service.
