The purpose of this project is to create a fascinating hands-on learning environment with a working ecosystem right in our classroom. My students won't just be reading, writing and discussing their subject, they will be experiencing how Aquaponics imitates the natural interaction between fish and plants. The materials I chose will combine active involvement by participating in the creation of an ecosystem that operates right before their eyes. They will also learn the benefits of growing nutritional food any time of year, in any weather, and anywhere they choose using an Aquaponic system. Understanding the nutritional benefits of the food we eat, learning the importance of caring for living creatures and their habitat is an invaluable lesson. This project will engage my students by incorporating the Florida Standards and allow my students to take ownership of their learning through the problem solving process and generating alternative solutions. Integrating STEM learning into my classroom will engage my students through all subjects by conducting experiments, monitoring results, and analyzing the results in-depth through collaboration.
