In our sensory classroom, I am creating a paper tree in the corner that will have leaves and lights hanging from the ceiling. I want to create a comfortable floor seating accommodation for the students so that we can sit on the floor around the tree and talk, communicate. We are blessed with students who are non-verbal, who have limited communication skills, and who are able to communicate but unable to express themselves and their feelings. Providing them a fun, safe, non-threatening environment to develop communication skills will be invaluable. You will not only be providing comfortable seating, but life-long skills that will help them be successful as they transition from school to adulthood. We made significant progress last year, but I am afraid that much of it has been lost due to the COVID-19 break. We are scheduled to start back on August 12th and I am hoping to be able to share this new opportunity with them. In addition, our sensory classroom is also used to assist students with de-escalating when they become angry or anxious due to sensory overload or other issues. Allowing them the floor seating with the desk to work quietly away from others for a short period of time in the peaceful setting under the tree, will be a wonderful coping tool.
