I am continually adding to my classroom library but realized many of the books I grew up reading depicted primarily white characters and I could relate to many of the stories, however, that is not the same for my students. Many of the books in this project have the characters that are of color that will hopefully be a mirror for my students. Viewing literature through a lens of windows and mirrors helps us understand that, in addition to texts being stories to be enjoyed, they are powerful tools of social justice. By donating to our project, you will give students the opportunity to read and engage in literature that reflects their life experiences and the person they see in the mirror. With access to mirror texts, students are able to see that their narrative matters, and with access to window texts, students learn to understand and appreciate the narratives of others.
