The supplies and materials from this project will help support and encourage participation and motivation during reading time. There are many wonderful books we were lucky enough to read as kids. Books that helped us learn our colors, numbers, animals, and so on! But many of these books are written with the typical developing child in mind. There aren't many modified versions out there that make them accessible to students who are non-verbal or have difficulty with verbal comprehension. And if there are some, they tend to be expensive. Other students are English Language Learners, and augmented books with Spanish (or other native language) picture symbols are even more rare. So, let's make books accessible to all! The voice recorder buttons will help my students participate during reading time, as they can press the button with pre-recorded messages to direct our reading (e.g. turn, all done) and answer questions (e.g. yes/no). Picture symbols will be created to accompany these classic books so that these special kiddos can better understand and follow along with the story. The toys will give them a chance to develop their pretend play skills, and to target core vocabulary we learned during reading lessons. We need to support and adapt to the various learning styles of all students!
