A "mindfulness" or sensory room has a lot of research into the benefits of helping with undesirable behaviors and students with different disabilities. Bringing a mindfulness room to the students at my school will create a space where they can calm down, unwind, and have a respite from the everyday stress that they face. These students have high expectations to excel and work hard and they meet these expectations everyday. The special education students at my school deserve a space where they can feel calm and supported. This space will consist of flexible seating, different light sources, and sensory/ calm down items. This will help students have a place to feel supported after times of distress. This can serve as a reward but also it should serve as a place where the students calm down from feeling overwhelmed or triggered. The students I work with and their disabilities often make them feel out of place and can cause simple things for us to feel monumental and they need a place where they can unwind and decompress. Please help us by supplying us with items to make the space exactly what they need.
