When people think social studies they think boring lectures and constant readings. My goal is to change that! Social studies can be fun exciting and hands-on if given the chance! From mummified apples to mosaics and building aqueducts! With your help you would be supporting fun in the classroom, by helping students make a sarcophagus for their mummified apples. The students practiced the art of embalming in the mummification process on their apples and will soon chip our their apples from it's salt and baking soda mixtures and make them ready to complete the process into the afterlife. It is important for social studies to combine and work with other subjects, in this project students had a combination of simple chemistry and math by making observations and working with measurements. The last step in the mummification process is putting the apple in a sarcophagus. Students will decorate it with hieroglyphics or make a cartouche for their apple. The second project of Hands-on History is having students discover the importance of recycling with the paper making kit for our Ancient China unit. As Ancient China created some of the most life changing and well known inventions, students will learn their importance by recreating the most influential invention, paper. With this project we will discuss the significance of writing, communication and the impact paper had on the ancient world.
