Blocks and dress-up clothes will provide the tools my students need to express their creativity. While playing creatively, children are using social language, building relationships with their peers, negotiating conflicts and disagreements, and brainstorming ideas. These are all skills that adults need to be successful in the work force. Children are also learning how to manage the emotional demands of socializing and sharing with others. I present mini-lessons about interpersonal relationships based on my observations of students as they play. Everything we do in kindergarten can present a teachable moment. Students minds and bodies need creative play to prepare them for the challenging learning standards waiting for them as they move through elementary school.
