My students regularly use "mentor" texts to guide their inquiry assignments as researchers, critical readers, writers, and civic-minded community members. Having a physical space that represents many stories allows my students to make meaning of their own and others' perspectives and experiences. We also thrive on texts that help us access the stories of life-long learners and change-makers, highlighting the human context for the academic content we immerse ourselves in. For example, in our current unit, Books like "Shark Lady" and other biographies will help my students put new skills into practice as non-fiction readers, writers, and as scientists. Lastly, we love our cozy classroom library but could benefit from a display shelf that can fit our larger hardback books. It's also important to use our space economically, which our requested double-sided display shelf would support. Additionally, to integrate our topics across subjects, I would love to use a display shelf to put a spotlight on books relevant to the current topic of study in science, social studies, reading, and writing.
