Students will spend several weeks reading through The Hot Zone. They will read both independently and in the classroom. Students will improve literacy skills while also learning about Ebola as a disease, how it's transmitted, symptoms, treatment, etc. This book will also allow students to learn about the geography and people of Central Africa. Through the book, students will learn how epidemiologists worked to control the Ebola outbreaks of the 1970s and 1980s. Students will make comparisons of current Ebola outbreaks and how they are handled in terms of prevention and treatment. Social determinants of health will be considered as factors that affect Ebola outbreaks. Students will complete a summative assignment that includes an original art piece and book synopsis. I
