Early learning experiences set a precedent throughout the school years! My students are ages 3-5 and have a variety of special needs. Their diagnoses range from developmental delays to autism, to genetic syndromes. Regardless of the label, my students bring their own unique gifts to my classroom. When helping my project, you are helping me meet my students where they are, building off of strengths as well as providing a positive preschool experience. The lessons learned in my classroom are invaluable life skills. For example, picture this. You walk into a classroom. The group of children are at circle time where they are learning about similarities and differences in all families. This is done through song, books and discussion. The children are focused because their various sensory needs are met through the flexible seating (a peapod, a bean bag chair, a mat on the floor). They are also able to attend by using various fidget, such as tubes and sphere balls. Headphones are also being used to mute sound; allowing students to tolerate any noises that occur. After circle time, the class goes to play time. The children use the dolls and furniture items to pretend play various family celebration scenarios. In another play center, student communication is promoted through the use of auditory phones, where they can "call" a family member all while hearing their own voice. At another center a privacy screen is used for a speech therapist and a student to work one on one on labeling a puzzle of a family. This can only happen by helping me with my project. The items I requested will help me meet their sensory needs, improve attention through flexible seating, and help them learn social skills through play.
