We need help with sustaining our school garden! Our students and our community came together on planting day to create our school garden. All students in grades TK-6th help with planting and maintaining our garden. We have a total of 9 raised beds and we plant 2-3 times a year. Each grade level is assigned a planter box and the students are responsible fo pulling weeds, adding soil, planting seedlings, and watering their box. We are completely organic and just add love and water to our garden. The garden benefits our students in ways that go far beyond the classroom. It offers hands-on experiences and opportunities to learn across disciplines. With the adoption of common core, students are encouraged to examine their learning closely through discussions, creative problem solving, and communicating their own ideas. Students also learn about nutrition. We have found that when students plant their own vegetables, they are more willing to try new things. The garden also helps our students understand how we are all connected and why it is important to take care of the environment. Finally, our garden connects students to the community and develops school pride. Gardening is fun at all stages of life. It connects young and old, in fact, many students have reported that they grow their own vegetables at home because of our school garden. We need help with purchasing our seedlings and soil and with garden maintenance!
