Research shows that students suffering from crisis need a physical space to de-escalate and feel safe. The colors, lighting, and furniture need to be calming and relaxing in order to help students learn self-regulation. Our team is combining individual projects to build a room that best supports our diverse student needs. The goal for students is to choose to deescalate rather than have more severe outbursts requiring more severe intervention. Caring adults will facilitate the cool-down experience but the long-term goal is for students to see the room as a personal tool and for the self-regulating behaviors to generalize into their broader life.
