My project focuses on allowing students to express their creativity through writing and publishing their own hardcover book. This project will supply each student with a blank slate that is waiting to be filled with their own words and their own illustrations.
With this project, each student will become a published author of a hardcover book. Students will be able to plan, write, illustrate and take home their own hardcover book. Many of my students struggle with writing, specifically with developing thoughts and articulating them. With this project, students will become engaged with their writing by taking ownership of it.
The idea for this project actually stems from my own experiences. When I was in fifth grade, at the same school where I currently teach, I was able to write and illustrate my own hardcover book. I took so much pride in that book and it is still in my possession today. I brought my book to my classroom and placed it on my bookshelf with the other books for students to read, never thinking much of it. So many of my students have seen the book, read it and were amazed that it was written by me when I was their age. I got so many comments of, "Ms. Frazier you wrote this when you went here?!" or "How did you write this book yourself?" Noticing that it peaked their interest, I wanted them to have that experience. It is amazing to see the impact that the experience of writing a book had on me. I would love for that same impact to reach my students and encourage them to take pride in a project that is completely theirs.
