The books will help students to understand narrative text structure, learn about strong characters, and understand how the setting of a book can really affect a story line. These books are set in California on Alcatraz Island in the 1930"s, a time and place that has peaked the interest of students who are yearning to learn more about the current tourist attractions of their state. In addition, the kids are highly motivated to read this book which will lead to increased fluency and comprehension. Also, these books will help to create a community of students who love to read a good novel and be transported to different places and different times.
