Flexible seating gives students the opportunity to take charge of their learning. During group and independent work time, students may choose a location where they would like to work. Right now the only choices I have in my classroom are to lay on the floor or to sit in their chairs. These flexible seating options will allow students to have more control over their environment and give them the opportunity to twist, wobble, fidget, and bounce. Being a first year teacher, I noticed right away how difficult it was for my students to sit in their regular chairs for the entire day. Children need movement in their everyday lives and this project would allow them to do so. I want to help my students feel comfortable so they are calm, focused, and productive. These flexible seating options will allow my students to stimulate their sense of touch which will help them to focus and process information. Flexible seating encourages children to share space and supplies. It also teaches them to take turns and try out different seating options. Collaboration is key to our classroom community and flexible seating helps make this possible. I believe these flexible seating options will give students a sense of responsibility and ownership of their learning as well as make them feel excited about school.
