To help our students understand the world that existed before them, we want them to have access to information in quality intriguing texts at all levels. We spend time in class building knowledge about resilience during the Great Depression, Cultures in Conflict (Native Americans and the settlers), A War Between Us (the Civil War), Breaking Barriers (how minorities have used sports to change society), but we want to them to take their learning to that next level. Students need engaging authentic texts in their hands to build knowledge about the past. These texts will give students at all levels opportunities to have texts in their hands that do not look like a boring textbook. We would like to have books to intrigue students to read more and help them answer their own questions about history through all different perspectives. These books will be used for students to personally choose a topic related to what is happening in class, but connects with them personally. We want to use these texts, instead of everyone using the same text, to improve students' reading and knowledge.
