Math can be a difficult subject to learn, especially when the concepts are more abstract. Our goal in 2nd-grade is to set students up for success throughout the rest of their academic lives with a clear understanding of the basics of mathematics specifically within addition and subtraction. When 2nd-graders can physically see the math problem they grasp the concept faster. When we introduce the concept of borrowing a number from another place, students struggle with understanding why they can't just subtract on down and what borrowing 1 from the tens place means. Giving them something physical- like base-ten blocks allows them to see what is happening when we are subtracting or adding.
