Having formerly taught older grades, my classroom library is lacking picture books for my third graders. In addition, I want to encourage wide reading in my students by conducting a mock Caldecott book awards project. My students will read former Caldecott book award winners, and learn the criteria used by the American Library Association to select the medal winner and honor books each year. Then we will read many 2019 picture books as a class, evaluate them according to the criteria, and give students a chance to prove why a favorite book meets the ALA's criteria. The students will vote on a winner (with a secret ballot!) for the 2020 Caldecott award winner of our class. In January, when the actual winner is announced, we will have a Caldecott book party to celebrate. Finally, if we did not read the winner, I will purchase it and read it to my students, while discussing why this book met the criteria.
