These books will be used during small, guided reading groups with mainly fourth and fifth grade students. I wish to encourage a love of reading, and get my students to start to make connections to their own lives through engaging stories. Once the engagement and personal connection is established when reading, then the fluency and comprehension become much easier for students to develop. I know that putting brand new, high interest graphic novels in the hands of my students will increase their engagement and offer more opportunities for reading growth. Graphic novels are appealing to students without an overwhelming amount of text to read. Many students who struggle with reading comprehension do better with a graphic novel because of the illustrations to aid in their understanding.
