My 8th grade students are a mix of abilities and ranges. For those who read below grade level, many are identified to receive additional instruction and interventions in order to close the gap. Our school is a 6-8 grade public middle school with a large Hispanic and free and reduced-price lunch population. Even though many of these students are behind academically, assessment data shows that our school exceeds expected yearly growth in reading. This takes hard work and a willingness to put forth extra time and effort. My job as their regular education classroom teacher is to provide and modify my curriculum to meet their individual needs. I rely greatly on the use of companion audio text to supplement their independent reading in their novels and also for reading required text in the classroom.
