Allowing fidgety students to switch between sitting and standing without any adult help is a great way to help them focus on their work rather than on their discomfort. In our classrooms where students sit at a computer for up to 90-minute intervals, many students find it difficult to stay focused. This is especially true of students with diagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder but also applies to other students who may have physical problems that cause real pain when they must sit for extended periods. It is also possible that standing desks benefit students with kinesthetic learning styles, allowing them the freedom of movement to commit ideas to memory more consistently. Other students feel mentally or physically fatigued when sitting for extended periods and find it difficult to stay awake. Each of these instances tends to result in frequent requests to visit the pencil sharpener, water fountain, or restroom simply for the opportunity to move around. Consequently, the learning environment is interrupted or disrupted for others as well. Studies have shown that opportunities for standing to work increase memory and focus for many students. Some Students who have the option to stand as needed have fewer disciplinary problems and are able to be more productive in completing tasks; therefore, adjustable standing desks are likely to be most beneficial. Students could then sit for part of the day and stand when they feel the need.
