I am Rhonda Williams of HTES in Newark, NJ, working as part of the National Elementary School Honor Society, Kids Changing the World project. The purpose of this project is to encourage, expose and arouse our children, to not only acknowledge the challenges in their communities, but to face them head-on. The main reason for this letter, is to ask for 25 copies of the book Real Kids, Real Stories, Real Change, by Garth Sundem, 36 passports and 36 writing journals to be donated to this project. It will serve as inspiration for change by highlighting the courageous actions an of children around the world. In addition, for each country that the students “visit” in the book, we’d like to stamp their passport to remind them that the world is bigger than the four corners of their neighborhood. Our students live in a Newark, New Jersey community Suffer from many of the hardships that impact other cities like economic troubles, high local unemployment, condemned homes, empty lots and deserted areas that often times attract criminal activity. For some, this would be despair. For us, this is our home, our world, where our journey to change the world will begin through academic enrichment, intellectual nourishment and growth. It is our hope that the work that will do will inspire change in the community and contribute to uplifting the hearts and mindsets of the youth of the community.
