Maya Angelou once said, "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." Students, especially Gen Z teenagers, are hungry for books that are cool and diverse! This project is meant to help me aquire the books that they, my students, want to read. Our school's English Dept has shifted to allow choice every day and I have seen a change in some of our readers. However, we still need books that represent characters that are not traditionally in the textbook canon. So many of our students, and their reading preferences, are not getting the representation that our students would prefer. Why? Because we are building these libraries almost entirely out of our own funds. Independent choice reading is essential as education evolves and changes to meet the needs of our increasingly connected students! Especially our LGBTQ+ and POC students. Help me get more titles to them, please!
