My students will use the tablet to access educational applications for autism. Students will use the tablets as a positive reinforcement to work for when they have finished working on their goals. I work in a high poverty school district in the heart of the Norfolk VA in Norfolk Public Schools. Over 60% of the student population receives free or reduced lunches. The students I serve are diagnosed with autism. Autism is a brain-based genetic trait that makes reading, writing, and spelling difficult. Although children with autism may have trouble with written language, it has nothing to do with a lack of intellect. These children are bright and talented individuals who just need a different approach to learning. I try to look at the big picture for my students and go beyond just teaching them reading, writing, and spelling skills. Since we live in a high poverty area, I think it is important to teach them life skills that they may not get elsewhere. We just need the right tools to make this kind of learning possible. "If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." ~Ignacio Estrada My students learn best through multi-sensory teaching and technology. Having access to this technology will empower them to learn new life skills that will impact them for years to come.
