As mentioned before, we integrate all subject areas into science. One of our science units is learning about life! As we are planning this upcoming unit, we wanted to integrate science observation into our writing instruction. In order to make the activities accessible to all students, we need to be able to capture images, save them and share them online through Canvas. Being able to upload pics from these microscopes into our lessons on Canvas will allow all students to participate. Although we have obtained 7 microscopes and a variety of slides for students to use, students at home cannot participate. We would like our students to be able look at different specimens under microscopes and then write about their observations in great detail. We believe using the microscopes will strengthen our students' abilities to describe things in detail as they are writing. We plan to have our students do 2 or more writing projects this year during the life unit. The first writing project will be about elaborating and adjectives. Their mission or task will be to help another person visualize what they saw under a microscope. We want them to be able to describe their specimen in great detail. They will be required to use the planning, writing, revising and editing strategies we have been working on throughout the year. Younger students will be expected to write simple sentences with coordinating adjectives, whereas older students will be expected to write 2-3 paragraphs focusing on several different traits and elaborate adjectives. For the second project, the students will compare and contrast two similar specimens, ie: 2 antennae or 2 wings. Younger students will draw simple illustrations and write sentences that correlate with their illustrations. Older students will write essays with at least 3 paragraphs describing their differences and similarities.
