Each year, I do a self-portrait lesson with my students where they are to draw a portrait of themselves. In doing this, they learn about the importance of using their observation skills to notice details in the world around them. This helps them to become better critical thinkers by getting them to really focus on real-life objects and people, breaking down what they see and translating that through their hand onto paper. With a set of classroom double sided mirrors, my students will be able to really see themselves and sit across from partners so that they may collaborate and share observations they make. We talk about the proportions of the face through anatomy, noticing how bone and muscle work together to create our unique faces and show emotions. Doing this lesson without mirrors does not give them the best opportunity to learn as they would be using a printed image or working from memory. The purpose is to truly see themselves and what they are made of.
