As a class, we read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. While the book is outdated, the themes and topics transcend time. For my Hi-Cap (honors) students, reading The Outsiders will be a breeze, so I wanted to do something different. My plan is to incorporate The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, a modern novel, and compare and contrast the two novels major themes surrounding social injustice, loyalty to family and friends, and social status. Reading is a way for students to connect to the world around them, even if they may never see the types of conflicts portrayed in a novel. However, I firmly feel that reading is the gateway to such a powerful connection to characters and social issues that it can really open doors to having powerful and constructive conversations around very real and very difficult topics. With that, we need a class set of 30 The Hate U Give novels. This way, my Hi-Cap students will have a diverse and enriching experience and be able to apply the skill set of comparing and contrasting two texts using text-based evidence.
