Our students are a lively group of learners from many different places, and we want them to come together as they learn language and literacy in First Grade. Our classroom is "bare bones" and we want a rug for our meeting area. The rug is not only for making meetings and read alouds more comfortable, but the rug also signifies that we are a community of learners who join together to support each other as we learn with and from one another. It's important for learners to lean in and sit eye-to-eye, knee-to-knee and engage in social learning activities that build language.
