Are you more comfortable sitting in a desk or on your couch? Just like adults, many students find sitting in seating other than desk more beneficial to their learning experience. Our students currently have a couch and butterfly chairs that they can choose to sit in daily. When seated at the couch they can use clip boards and we have the butterfly chairs placed around a table. We would like to add memory-foam, bean bags chairs for the students who prefer to be closer to the ground. The four chairs would allow us to lower a current table permanently for those students. Having these seating options located around tables allows our students to participate in collaborative learning which encourages students to enhance their social skills. Currently, about 40% of our students have different learning needs that need to be met daily in our class. Those specific needs include, but are not limited to, sensory, social, and tiered instruction. Adaptive seating allows us to meet many sensory needs because seating is chosen by the students daily. Adaptive seating has also opened up our class to have discussions about how different students prefer different seats because of their different needs. In turn, this has promoted students to work in groups that are social different than what they have worked in before because they are choosing the seating over working with friends. This has boosted many students' social skills and built new relationships within the school. Finally, adaptive seating allows us to easily tier instruction to meet students needs. With the focus being turned to collaboration students work as a team to complete assignments which leads to students filling different roles that meet their learning needs.
