One of the most important and influential acts I can do as an English teacher is text selection. As I have mentioned before, my students are aware of the complex world around them. Choosing an archaic (though foundational) work like Of Mice and Men or To Kill a Mockingbird as a full-class text deprives them of A) characters that reflect their identity B) conversing about present-day issues related to the story and C) motivation to read--they do not wish to read a text written in a different time period for a different audience. In fact, they deserve to read a book by an author who wrote the story just for them. These copies of Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds will help my students read literature that is directly related to the issues they care about most: justice and decision-making. After I read this book, I knew I had to discuss it with students. It is short enough to keep their attention, yet dense enough for them to bridge the text to real life. It was written in 2017 and meant to talk about issues that have historically been left out of Young Adult Literature (it is often one of the most checked out books in our library because students have found it relatable). This book is necessary for my classroom so I can show students how entertaining and progressive reading can be. At some point in their education, my students learned to forget how impactful reading was, and I think this book will reintroduce them back to the wonder and educational value of reading. They deserve to study this book.
