Fresh, new pencils, markers, crayons, and paper, full of bright, beautiful color will inspire my students to reinforce their learning through projects that expand on a book they read, or increase their exposure to new vocabulary and concepts. English Language Learners are behind their peers academically, not because they are incapable of doing the work, but because they lack the skills in English. Learning a second language requires repeated exposure to language, and the more practice they get, the better! Sometimes expression through art is exactly what a second language learner needs when the words aren't quite there yet! On top of that, my students love their independence and working on a white board and a clip board, having their "own space," engages them more in their work. Having the right tools to do their job well is also highly motivational.
