The project I am applying for is providing comfortable and flexible reading locations throughout the classroom. A 2012 study from the University of Minnesota found that students participated 48% more in discussions in a classroom with collaborative group seating versus traditional lecture-style seating, and also improved their performance on standardized tests. Our society is changing and developing in wonderful ways through technology and engineering but students reading and comprehension levels are dropping. We are preparing students for the advancements in technology and engineering through STEAM and PLTW. Students spend more time on chromebooks, video games, ipads and watching television than they spend time reading. Reading is a vital skill in finding a good job. Many well-paying jobs require reading as a part of job performance. Poor reading skills increases the amount of time it takes to understand what is being asked in the workplace. This project goal is to create comfortable reading areas around the classroom so students want to come in and read for fun. Many of their home lives are not comfortable for many reasons. Due to this, I want to provide a safe a comfortable learning environment for them. The project is to develop a love for reading among the students by providing them with a comfortable safe environment. My goal is to help students develop a higher reading level and obtain more comprehension from their books, articles and other resources. A person is limited in what they can accomplish without good reading and comprehension skills. I do not what to set a limit for the students that I teach. With this donation I hope to help students gain educational conversations and gain progress in reading comprehension skills throughout the year.
