Our students come to school looking forward to a stable, caring environment. They choose school over the streets, but have trouble transitioning into the school environment each day. These incentives will help motivate students to focus as they are rewarded for being on task, completing work and earning credits. It will also give them choice so they feel empowered and excited. As intrinsic motivation towards school runs low historically in the community, the manipulatives, candy and snacks will provide extrinsic motivators as our students build their self-discipline. Working towards rewards instead of avoiding punishments will work to help change perspective and interaction. Ultimately, our goal is for our students to learn the knowledge and skills necessary for them to positively contribute to our community and we recognize that we must not just teach, but teach them how to achieve. As their Graduation Coach, my goals are fundamental- to help the students dream and set goals, to realize their value, to applaud them for healthy behaviors and create a plan I can support them through on their journey to graduating high school and beyond. I truly believe these items will support their growth and success towards graduation and beyond.
