As a first year teacher, my classroom library is very modest and takes up only one and a half shelves in my classroom. All of the books in the classroom library have come from Savers, garage sales, and wonderful friends and family. I believe that having a good classroom library is so important, especially because my students love to read and learn. Even though we have a wonderful school library where I teach, I want my students to be able to find books within our classroom that they are excited to read. With these books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of engaging books that will allow them to read independently. One of our centers during small group time is read to self. My students will be more actively engaged in what they are reading given the variety of books and their interest in them. Knowing my students, they will be excited to share the fun new facts they learned while reading the nonfiction books. They will also be excited to share with their friends and peers about the fiction books they have read.
