This project is designed to expand upon our existing physical education program. During the winter months of December, January, February and March, we will develop various activities that will involve the art of snowshoeing. The program will begin with instruction on proper technique but we anticipate introducing a history of the development of snowshoeing through the ages to instill in the students a sense of not only the history of but appreciation for the sport. Current plans involve half and full day excursions that will take students to area golf courses and a local Boy Scout facility with trails. These will be undertaken on a monthly basis and emphasize an appreciation for nature and the outdoors and the importance of proper preparation with respect to clothing, food and hydration for outdoor activities during winter months. On a weekly basis, we will have access to an open area on campus where we can spend a 90 minute physical education period in snowshoe activities such as as races, relays and dashes. We can utilize these activities to encourage friendly competition and the importance of team collaboration, specifically in snowshoe relays. The ultimate goal of this project, in addition meeting the physical education requirements of the NH Department of Education, is to provide the students with a skill that will lead to an activity that promotes lifelong health when the option of competitive sports no longer exists.
