We are hoping to create a complete Math Nerd Culture, full of crazy games and engaging activities culminating in huge All Day Math Olympics. But first, we need to build a solid foundation using a rather traditional tool, flashcards. Yes, that old standby actually has a lot of research supporting their use: Flashcards give the brain a quick way to check correct answers, which is is an act of self-reflection that deepens memory. They also train active recall which teaches the brain to remember a term, concept, or process without context clues. By learning something in this way, stronger neuron connections form in the brain because it is more difficult for your brain, making it more likely to remember the information in the future. And, lastly, flashcards allow the act of learning and memorizing until each student is a confident expert on the information. After providing all students with their very own matching cards, we plan on creating a school-wide commitment to total mastery (following guidelines from Teach Like a Champion), producing an entire school of confident experts who will then be able to tackle complex, multistep word problems and hands-on application with this corporate confidence and excitement.
